Pico Duarte is the highest peak in the Caribbean, 10,084 ft, and is only about three days on mule from Los Frios. There are two main routes to get to the peak, south and north. The Southern route is less popular because it is further and more remote. The guide group has had a few trips a year to manage, and we are hoping that number will grow. The Dominican Park Service recently approved a large grant for the guide group. This will include rustic cabins, mules, trail work, and more guide training.

Los Guias de los Montes Frios have been working as a group for the last 10 years. And this year they received a large donation from the people who participated in the Young Tree Coffee sponsored Gear Drive.

I am so proud of the Eco Tourism Guides.  They have been working so hard for so many years.  As part of the grant from the Park Service they were paid to cut 15 miles of trail towards Pico Durate.  The trail was cut in June of 2008.  In January 2009 I took that trail to visit Antonio’s farm.  The trail was still in amazing condition because they did such quality work.  10 mules have been approved for the group.  See Earth Bag construction for more information on the group.
